Graduate of the Coady International Institute at St Francis Xavier University in Canada, in Action Research and Community Development. He has led several studies throughout Haiti, including the “National Youth Survey – Haiti 2015” with the Haitian Center for Leadership and Excellence. Max-Prosper Fortuna is also a trainer, researcher and entrepreneur. He has several years of experience in technology management and journalism. Fauzia Matyas-Jamal Fauzia Matyas-Jamal recently relocated to Fredericton and is seeking to engage with local and global development networks. Drawn to ACIC’s values of justice and sustainability, she brings interest and initiative to committee work, particularly in governance and symposium planning. Her proactive approach reflects a commitment to meaningful community connection and collaborative change. Austin I.P. O'Neill Austin I.P. O’Neill is a second-year student at the University of New Brunswick’s School of Leadership Studies, minoring in Law in Society. A passionate advocate for leadership, law, and public service, he brings experience in student governance, legal aid, and community volunteering. Austin is committed to fostering equity and authentic leadership in Atlantic Canada and is eager to contribute to ACIC’s mission through collaborative action and dialogue. Kaitlyn Keleher Kaitlyn is a recent graduate of Mount Allison University, with a degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE). Kaitlyn has worked for the federal and provincial governments and remains committed to active global citizenship and the promotion of the Atlantic provinces. Kaitlyn seeks to continue her career in politics and justice, with a focus on international policy. Madison O'Connor Madison is currently a Career Resource Centre Coordinator, providing pre-employment services to high school students and community members. Madison holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Criminology and minors in Communications & Public Policy, Sociology, and Human Rights from St. Thomas University Seiku Diakite Seiku is a social work student at St. Thomas University with a keen interest in International Development. Seiku aims to address systemic barriers affecting vulnerable populations in society, create awareness on how International social work can promote social justice and advocate for structural changes in society. Darlene Dorion An educator, a chartered mediator, a sustainable world peace activist, Darlene Doiron specialises in interpersonal workplace and community based conflict. She is best known for her longstanding peace work and dedication to creating a more positive and harmonious province of New Brunswick.

    < Back Atlantic Council for International Cooperation celebrates funding for International Youth Internship Program Atlantic Council for International Cooperation Feb 7, 2024 At an event celebrating International Development Week 2024, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development announced $24.5 million in funding for the International Youth Internships Program (IYIP) across Canada, including $4.23 million for the RYSING (Resilient Youth, Supported Inclusion, Network Growth) project jointly implemented by the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation and the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University (MI). The program offers Canadian youth the opportunity to gain valuable international work experience and make meaningful contributions through four-month international internship placements. Between 2024 and 2029, ACIC and MI’s IYIP program will place 190 interns with 22 partner organisations in 15 countries throughout Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, and Central America. Priority will be given to Racialized, Indigenous, and 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, and youth who have experienced barriers to employment due to COVID-19. Applications for the first IYIP cohort will open on February 12, 2024. Youth who are interested in acquiring new skills and gaining professional experience abroad or contributing their knowledge, skills and lived experiences to meaningful projects abroad are encouraged to apply. Minister Hussen, on announcing the program funding, said “Youth engagement matters. It creates meaningful opportunities for new generations to be agents of change in their communities. She teaches critical media literacy at the undergraduate and graduate levels and is known by her students for her engaging and participatory teaching style. As both a professor and a researcher, DeNel believes in the power of stories and storytelling.

ACIC Symposium 2025 CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF SOLIDARITY & GLOBAL COOPERATION Arturo Ezquerro-Cañete Maritimes Coordinator Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network (BTS) About Arturo Arturo Ezquerro-Cañete has been the BTS Maritimes Coordinator since 2022, facilitating Maritimes-based advocacy and grassroots organizing in support of Guatemalan partner organizations struggling for political, social and economic justice. With the goal of building solidarity across borders, Dr. Ezquerro-Cañete has facilitated public speaking tours featuring long-term BTS partners, as well as organized a series of field schools and delegations to Guatemala. Dr. Ezquerro-Cañete’s Maritimes-based activism is grounded in his considerable experience researching the politics of natural resource extraction in Latin America. For his doctoral research he studied campesino movement resistance to large-scale soybean agribusiness in Paraguay. He holds a PhD in International Development Studies and has taught at universities across the Maritimes, including Saint Mary’s University, Acadia University, and the University of New Brunswick. He enjoys supervising students and finds it particularly meaningful and rewarding to connect them with BTS through volunteer experiential learning, summer job placements, human rights delegations, and internship opportunities in Guatemala. Arturo also volunteers with the Centre for Migrant Worker Rights Nova Scotia (CMWR NS) and is a former Outreach Coordinator at the Latin American House community centre in London, UK. He currently lives in Halifax (Kjipuktuk) with his partner.

ACIC Symposium 2025 CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF SOLIDARITY & GLOBAL COOPERATION María Inés Cuj Chopén General Coordinator, Administrator, and Certified Permaculturist The Mesoamerican Permaculture Institute (IMAP) About María As IMAP’s Coordinator and Administrator, María Inés Cuj Chopén brings years of experience and passion to the topics of permaculture, biodiversity, food sovereignty, community education, reclaiming ancestral practices and institutional strengthening. With a degree in Public Accounting and Auditing and extensive coursework in social work, Ms. Cuj has a long track record of support for local organizations, including 12 years at IMAP and previously, 12 years as the Finance Director at the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging in San Lucas Tolimán. Through her leadership at IMAP, Ms. Cuj has helped the organization establish greater financial sustainability. She has also worked with youth and local farmers to help them reclaim ancestral knowledge of agricultural practices and the Maya cosmovision, including using the Cholq'ij count of days and the 13 nawales (energies of the day) to understand human beings and nature. She also represents IMAP in Guatemala’s National Network for the Defense of Food Sovereignty (REDSAG). Ms. Cuj is also passionate about sharing IMAP’s vital efforts to promote sustainability, biodiversity, and food sovereignty across borders and has participated in national and international knowledge exchanges and speaking tours, including a 2023 speaking tour in Maritimes Canada.

ACIC Symposium 2025 CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF SOLIDARITY & GLOBAL COOPERATION Kirsten Larson PhD Researcher Irish Centre for Human Rights (ICHR), University of Galway About Kirsten Kirsten Larson is a second-year PhD researcher at the Irish Centre for Human Rights (ICHR), University of Galway. She previously served as a research assistant to Siobhán Mullally, the UN Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, especially women and children. Kirsten holds a BA in Human Rights and Social Justice with a minor in Law from Carleton University, Canada, and an LLM in International Human Rights from the ICHR. Her doctoral research focuses on child trafficking in the context of armed conflict, with a particular focus on Northeast Syria.

    < Back Global Affairs Canada Funds ICN’s LIFT Program with $38.5 Million Inter-Council Network Feb 5, 2025 Global Affairs Canada Funds ICN’s LIFT Program, Significant Impact in Atlantic Region Halifax, Nova Scotia – February 5, 2025 – The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) is pleased to announce that Global Affairs Canada has provided $38.5 million in funding to the Inter-Council Network (ICN) to implement the LIFT program. This funding will support small and medium-sized organizations (SMOs) across Canada, including ACIC's members in the Atlantic region, helping them to continue and expand their impactful global development work. The Honorable Minister Ahmed Hussen made the funding announcement yesterday, during International Development Week (IDW), a week dedicated to raising awareness of global development issues and recognizing the contributions of Canadians in creating positive change around the world. IDW is celebrated annually in February, providing an opportunity to highlight the essential role that Canadian organizations, like those within the ICN and ACIC’s network, play in advancing global development and international cooperation. As a member of the ICN, ACIC is excited about how this funding will directly benefit organizations in the Atlantic region, enabling them to strengthen their development efforts, scale their projects, and continue addressing key global challenges such as poverty, climate change, and gender equality. "We are thrilled that Global Affairs Canada is supporting the ICN’s LIFT program, which will provide essential resources to small and medium-sized organizations across the country," said Jennifer Sloot, Executive Director of ACIC. "As part of the ICN, we are excited to see how this funding will empower our members in the Atlantic region to build on their vital work and create even greater impact in the communities they serve. This is an incredible opportunity for grassroots organizations to grow, collaborate, and make a lasting difference in the Global South." The LIFT program, designed to provide funding to grassroots Canadian NGOs, will allow organizations to scale their international development projects and strengthen their capacity to respond to the most pressing global challenges. ACIC’s members, which focus on sectors like education, health, environment, and human rights, will benefit from this funding to deepen their impact and strengthen local partnerships. In celebration of International Development Week, ACIC is hosting a number of events throughout the week to engage the public, raise awareness of global development issues, and recognize the incredible work of its members. These events will provide opportunities for learning, discussion, and connection among organizations and individuals passionate about making a difference in the world. ACIC Symposium 2025 CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF SOLIDARITY & GLOBAL COOPERATION Jennifer Elms Regional Gender Equality Advisor Aga Khan Foundation North America About Jennifer Jennifer Elms (she/her/elle) is a global gender specialist with 15 years working within East Africa, Southeast Asia, Australasia and North America. She is currently the Gender Equality Advisor at Aga Khan Foundation North America. Jennifer is passionate about working with partners to create innovative, intersectional, and sustainable gender-transformative change, with particular focus on women’s economic empowerment, gender-responsive learning systems, climate resilience, and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Jennifer earned a Master of Human Rights and Democratization at University of Sydney (Australia) and a Bachelor of Arts (Joint Majors Psychology and English Literature) at Memorial University of Newfoundland. When not working, Jennifer can be found playing basketball or telling cheesy jokes. Jennifer shares her journey with her white-water rafting and life partner, Hassan, and their two children.

Her research is on the wellness of Black Women in Nonprofit organizations. Timi has a B.Sc. in Sociology from the University of Lagos and an M.A. in Criminology from Saint Mary’s University. Her research interests are social problems and how it affects health and wellbeing.
