Fauzia Matyas-Jamal Fauzia Matyas-Jamal recently relocated to Fredericton and is seeking to engage with local and global development networks. Drawn to ACIC’s values of justice and sustainability, she brings interest and initiative to committee work, particularly in governance and symposium planning. Her proactive approach reflects a commitment to meaningful community connection and collaborative change. Austin I.P. O'Neill Austin I.P. O’Neill is a second-year student at the University of New Brunswick’s School of Leadership Studies, minoring in Law in Society. A passionate advocate for leadership, law, and public service, he brings experience in student governance, legal aid, and community volunteering. Austin is committed to fostering equity and authentic leadership in Atlantic Canada and is eager to contribute to ACIC’s mission through collaborative action and dialogue. Kaitlyn Keleher Kaitlyn is a recent graduate of Mount Allison University, with a degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE). Kaitlyn has worked for the federal and provincial governments and remains committed to active global citizenship and the promotion of the Atlantic provinces. Kaitlyn seeks to continue her career in politics and justice, with a focus on international policy. Madison O'Connor Madison is currently a Career Resource Centre Coordinator, providing pre-employment services to high school students and community members. Madison holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Criminology and minors in Communications & Public Policy, Sociology, and Human Rights from St. Thomas University Seiku Diakite Seiku is a social work student at St. Thomas University with a keen interest in International Development. Seiku aims to address systemic barriers affecting vulnerable populations in society, create awareness on how International social work can promote social justice and advocate for structural changes in society. Darlene Dorion An educator, a chartered mediator, a sustainable world peace activist, Darlene Doiron specialises in interpersonal workplace and community based conflict. She is best known for her longstanding peace work and dedication to creating a more positive and harmonious province of New Brunswick.

ACIC Symposium 2025 CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF SOLIDARITY & GLOBAL COOPERATION Judyannet Muchiri Policy and Research Officer Inter-Council Network About Judyannet Judyannet Muchiri (she/her) is a feminist scholar–activist with experience in Canada’s international cooperation sector and the non-profit sector in Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Cameroon, and Uganda working on, researching and writing on gender equality, digital advocacy and civic participation. Currently, she is completing a PhD in Sociology, overseeing policy work at the Inter-Council Network (ICN), and co-leading the Africa Community Engagement (ACE) Hub.

ACIC Symposium 2025 CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF SOLIDARITY & GLOBAL COOPERATION Arturo Ezquerro-Cañete Maritimes Coordinator Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network (BTS) About Arturo Arturo Ezquerro-Cañete has been the BTS Maritimes Coordinator since 2022, facilitating Maritimes-based advocacy and grassroots organizing in support of Guatemalan partner organizations struggling for political, social and economic justice. With the goal of building solidarity across borders, Dr. Ezquerro-Cañete has facilitated public speaking tours featuring long-term BTS partners, as well as organized a series of field schools and delegations to Guatemala. Dr. Ezquerro-Cañete’s Maritimes-based activism is grounded in his considerable experience researching the politics of natural resource extraction in Latin America. For his doctoral research he studied campesino movement resistance to large-scale soybean agribusiness in Paraguay. He holds a PhD in International Development Studies and has taught at universities across the Maritimes, including Saint Mary’s University, Acadia University, and the University of New Brunswick. He enjoys supervising students and finds it particularly meaningful and rewarding to connect them with BTS through volunteer experiential learning, summer job placements, human rights delegations, and internship opportunities in Guatemala. Arturo also volunteers with the Centre for Migrant Worker Rights Nova Scotia (CMWR NS) and is a former Outreach Coordinator at the Latin American House community centre in London, UK. He currently lives in Halifax (Kjipuktuk) with his partner.

ACIC Symposium 2025 CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF SOLIDARITY & GLOBAL COOPERATION Bright Kwame Fiaga Founder and President International Council for Immigration, Entrepreneurship and Employment (ICIEE) About Bright Bright Kwame FIAGA is the Founder and President of the International Council for Immigration, Entrepreneurship and Employment (CIIEE International), and President of the National Commission of Inquiry and Investigation of the Consumers League of Togo (LCT). Winner of the Pan-African Young Exceptional African Award, Bright is a dedicated entrepreneur and an active member of both Togolese and African civil society. He is deeply involved in advocacy and awareness-raising efforts with the African Consumer Organization (OAC), and is an alumnus of the Africa Youth and Governance Convergence (AYGC) in both 2019 and 2023. Bright believes that civil society is the best space for preparing the next generation of citizens to live impactful lives. Since 2018, he has served as the Peace and Security Officer of the AfriKa Youth Movement (AYM), Togo hub. With over twelve years of experience in entrepreneurship and business management, Bright provides professional advice and entrepreneurial training to youth and women in his community. Recognized for his commitment, in 2018 he was selected by the U.S. Embassy in Togo to participate in the country’s first high-level international conference on social enterprises. Bright is especially passionate about the issue of irregular migration. “The sea has made too many mothers cry in Africa and elsewhere,” he says. Since 2017, he has actively worked to discourage risky and illegal migration, raising awareness among young people about the dangers of irregular immigration and the benefits of safe, informed, and responsible pathways. In December 2023, he founded CIIEE International, through which he continues to champion youth entrepreneurship and legal migration strategies. In July 2024, he received an international honorary distinction for his work in Nairobi, Kenya.

PhotoVoices Partners 2026 Apply by November 4! ACIC is looking for partners to help implement our 2026 PhotoVoices program! Through the program, Atlantic Canadian youth and youth from the international community use photos to share their stories, build skills, explore the Sustainable Development Goals, learn from experts in the field, and so much more. Apply by November 4! Stories are powerful: they weave people and experiences together, and shape how we see the world. Knowing the impact and value of a well-told story, ACIC’s PhotoVoices Program empowers youth to share the narratives they want to tell through photos. Through the program, Atlantic Canadian youth and youth from the Global South use photos to share their stories, build skills, explore the Sustainable Development Goals, learn from experts in the field, and so much more. Gender inequality is deeply rooted in our society. Women and girls worldwide are under-represented in leadership positions, refused access to education, economic empowerment, and essential health services, and are targeted victims of violence and discrimination. While all women face inequality, the consequences can be harsher for those coping with intersectional factors. Not all women share the same experiences, therefore strategies for change must also consider the effects of race, class, age, sexuality, ability, and nationality. Solutions to address these issues must be led by self-determining people in collaboration with their Communities and Nations. Given this reality, the 2026 PhotoVoice program will focus on women/girl's and/or Two Spirit identified youth. ACIC is currently seeking an international partner/s for its PhotoVoices Program. The program will include youth 17-29 years from Atlantic Canada and youth from the partner organization/s country. Program timeline: International partner selection: Nov 1, 2025 Youth recruitment: November to January 2025/26 Program start date: January 11, 2026 6 youth sessions will be held weekly from January 18 to Feb 22, 2026, on Sunday's Program end date: March 2026 Final report (narrative and financial): March 10, 2026 Role of the Partner Organization: Select 10 youth for the program Liaise with ACIC to make decisions on program implementation Provide support to youth participants in all aspects of program to ensure a positive experience and completion Administer program funds in accordance with ACIC funding requirements Complete mid-project and final reports (narrative and financial) Partner Qualifications: Partner must be located in an Official Development Assistance (ODA) country Must be a registered charity, non-governmental, non-profit, or civil society organization Must have been established in 2017 or earlier Must work directly with youth ages 17-29 Youth must have English proficiency (at a minimum) Must have the organizational capacity to support the program Must have a strong commitment to supporting and strengthening gender equality through their programs Note : This application is for the international partner to complete, NOT for youth. ACIC Symposium 2025 CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF SOLIDARITY & GLOBAL COOPERATION María Inés Cuj Chopén General Coordinator, Administrator, and Certified Permaculturist The Mesoamerican Permaculture Institute (IMAP) About María As IMAP’s Coordinator and Administrator, María Inés Cuj Chopén brings years of experience and passion to the topics of permaculture, biodiversity, food sovereignty, community education, reclaiming ancestral practices and institutional strengthening. With a degree in Public Accounting and Auditing and extensive coursework in social work, Ms. Cuj has a long track record of support for local organizations, including 12 years at IMAP and previously, 12 years as the Finance Director at the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging in San Lucas Tolimán. Through her leadership at IMAP, Ms. Cuj has helped the organization establish greater financial sustainability. She has also worked with youth and local farmers to help them reclaim ancestral knowledge of agricultural practices and the Maya cosmovision, including using the Cholq'ij count of days and the 13 nawales (energies of the day) to understand human beings and nature. She also represents IMAP in Guatemala’s National Network for the Defense of Food Sovereignty (REDSAG). Ms. Cuj is also passionate about sharing IMAP’s vital efforts to promote sustainability, biodiversity, and food sovereignty across borders and has participated in national and international knowledge exchanges and speaking tours, including a 2023 speaking tour in Maritimes Canada.
