About the event

The Multicultural Association of the Greater Moncton Area (MAGMA), the City of Moncton, and the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) will host a special International Development Week 2026 event marking the installation of a newly gifted public sculpture by Canadian artist Claude Roussel, celebrating Moncton’s five-year anniversary as an International City of Peace and highlighting local commitments to global solidarity and peace-building.

On Monday, September 15, 2025, Moncton City Council accepted the offer of “Peace” sculpture as part of their collection. This gift from the artist estate is aimed at celebrating Moncton’s 5-year anniversary of becoming one of the International Cities of Peace. The installation of the public art sculpture will be located at The Atrium, MAGMA, 22 Church St., Moncton, NB.

Claude Roussel’s expressions of Peace over the years:

When the Peace sculpture was first presented to the news network in 2001, Claude Roussel shared the following statement:

“Every time violent acts are committed by man, in my opinion, it is wounding peace on earth. With the violent barbarous events... we have another example of destroying the foundation of peace in the world.”

Even earlier, in 1950, he expressed:

“We hope that when the dove reaches its goal, we will all live in a more enjoyable and united world.”

This event also speaks directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, which aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies and foster cultures of nonviolence. The installation of Peace reflects Moncton’s continued commitment to advancing these global goals locally, while also connecting to broader objectives such as Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11). By honouring artistic expressions of peace and strengthening community spaces dedicated to dialogue and inclusion, the event highlights how local action contributes meaningfully to global aspirations for a more just, peaceful, and united world.
