About the event

This 90-minute International Development Week presentation is aimed at those new to PEI and explores local weather, climate, and storm preparedness through a global lens. Participants will learn what weather to expect on the Island, how to prepare for storms, and what to consider before, during, and after extreme weather events. The session also highlights the roles of government and individuals, differences in infrastructure within and outside Charlottetown, and how local climate resilience connects to global climate justice and adaptation efforts.

This event aligns closely with the spirit of International Development Week and Canada’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals by spotlighting how local climate realities are deeply linked to global systems. By helping newcomers understand PEI’s weather patterns, storm risks, and resilience practices, the session contributes to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), emphasizing equitable access to safety, information, and preparedness. The discussion of government responsibilities, community infrastructure, and individual roles mirrors broader global conversations on adaptation, climate justice, and shared responsibility. By grounding global issues in local experience, the event encourages participants to see themselves as part of a wider movement toward resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities—core themes of International Development Week.
