About the event
Join us for an engaging documentary screening and conversation with the Maritimes–Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network as we explore the realities of coffee and fair trade, and the people behind the cup. Together, we’ll look at how global trade systems affect farmers and communities, unpack what fair and ethical trade really mean in practice, and reflect on the responsibilities consumers and organizations hold in building more just supply chains.
This event directly supports the themes of International Development Week by illuminating how everyday consumer choices connect to global systems of equity, labour, and sustainability. By examining the lived realities of coffee growers and the complexities of fair and ethical trade, the session highlights key Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). The conversation encourages participants to reflect on the power dynamics embedded in global supply chains and the role that individuals and organizations in Atlantic Canada play in advancing fairer, more transparent trade practices. Through storytelling and dialogue, the event strengthens understanding of global interconnectedness and reinforces IDW’s call to build a more just and sustainable world.
