    Host a Lunch and Learn Session with ACIC Apply now! The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) is excited to invite researchers to present as part of our Lunch and Learn series. Apply now! Our Lunch and Learn Series aims to foster knowledge sharing, learning, and collaboration within the international development community by presenting the latest research being developed in universities across Atlantic Canada. It also aims to provide a space to discuss the latest in academics and community development or public engagement practice. These sessions are attended by professionals, students, and community leaders involved in or passionate about international cooperation, global solidarity and development. Topics of Interest: We are seeking presentations on a variety of timely and important topics, including but not limited to: international cooperation, global solidarity, feminist and gender inclusive development, public engagement, social justice and equity, Indigenous knowledges and decolonization, human rights and global governance, innovation in international development / cooperation, localization, youth engagement in development. Who Should Apply We encourage academics, current PhD candidates and recent Master’s-level graduates, working in relevant fields to apply. All successful applicants will be awarded a $450 honorarium for sharing their time and expertise. Presentation Windows: There are two windows during which we’d invite and work with successful candidates to present their research – November 15 to November 30, and January 15 to March 31.   • Artificial Intelligence For Social Good

    Artificial Intelligence For Social Good Register Now! This workshop series offers an accessible introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI), exploring its history, current landscape, and future possibilities. Participants will learn about AI’s role in addressing global challenges, such as climate change and sustainable development, and its impact on public policy. Register Now! This workshop series provides a comprehensive introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) with a focus on its growing influence in the social good sector. As AI continues to evolve, it is increasingly being applied to address critical global challenges, from combating climate change to improving healthcare and advancing gender equality. However, along with its transformative potential, AI also brings new ethical concerns about bias, privacy, and unintended consequences. In this series, participants will explore the history of AI, its current applications, and the importance of developing AI systems that are responsible, fair, and aligned with human values. Participants will also dive into AI’s role in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through case studies that showcase AI-driven innovations in areas such as environmental sustainability, clean water, and public health. Special attention will be given to how AI is being used in Canada, including insights from experts in the field. Through interactive discussions, practical exercises, and guest speakers, this series equips attendees with the tools to engage with AI thoughtfully and responsibly, and provides a framework for applying AI to create meaningful, positive change within their organizations and communities. What is Artificial Intelligence October 3rd, 1-3 PM Duration: 2 hrs Understanding what AI is, how it works, and how AI models impact our world, is a first step to AI literacy. In this workshop, we will learn about the history of AI, where it is today and future possibilities. We will dive into a discussion of innovation and the importance of intentional and responsible AI. We will explore Chatbots and prompts, and warm up our critical thinking skills. And wrap up with a discussion and continued learning opportunities. AI for Good October 25th, 1-3 PM Duration: 2 hrs AI has incredible potential for tackling local and global issues like climate change and gender equality. However, its potential is only possible when we weigh its risks and negative impacts on our planet and people. We will jump into learning about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and explore case studies on AI for Good. We will also welcome a special guest and speaker from Canada’s Ocean Supercluster to hear how Canada is using AI to address sustainable seafood, clean water, and protect our oceans. And, to wrapup, we will try out an AI for Good framework for our organization. AI & Public Policy November 19th, 1-3 PM Duration: 2 hrs The world is changing fast! When ChatGPT launched into the world in November 2022, it took us all by surprise - including governments. In this workshop, we’ll learn about the topline considerations for Canadian policymakers and how to engage the government on issues that matter to us. We will learn about different public policy frameworks, and how to choose what’s right for our organization. Using an AI tool, we will each write a public policy brief for our organization and discuss its strengths and weaknesses together. Kate Arthur Kate Arthur is a British-Canadian entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience in founder-leadership roles in technology, communications and digital education. She is currently co-founder at Comz, a global consulting group that empowers and supports executive leadership to bring AI & digital literacies into their organizations, communities, and countries. Internationally, Kate speaks on the importance of AI literacy and contributes regularly to global policy discussions. She is a contributor to UNESCO's work on AI competency frameworks for students and teachers; a Canadian Delegate for the United Nations High Level Political Forum; a member of CCUNESCO's Artificial Intelligence & UN Sustainable Development Goals Working group; a member of Canada's Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development's Artificial Intelligence Public Awareness Working Group; a Trustee of the Anita Goulden Trust, a UK based charity that financially supports the Anita Goulden Home & School for disabled youth from disadvantaged communities in Peru. Kate’s grandmother, Anita Goulden, started the School in 1958. Fluently bilingual (En/ Fr), Kate was raised & educated in the U.K., Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Argentina and Canada. In this Lunch and Learn series, explore what contributes to authentic and safe participation and engagement of youth, especially young women and young leaders. Join us on March 19 and 21 to learn from two recent graduate and doctoral research aimed at benefiting organizations and programs aimed at engaging youth. These 60-minutes sessions will include sharing recent academic research, experiential learning and exploring practical tools to engaging youth effectively. Tuesday, March 19: Safer Spaces and Young Women’s Civic Participation Judyannet Muchiri shares insights from her doctoral research that examines the relationship between safe/r spaces and young women’s civic participation to demonstrate the ways in which structural factors influence their participation. Using feminist and decolonial theories and methods and drawing on young women, gender equality advocates and NGOs and CBOs that work with young women in Kenya, this presentation will address: 1. How do young women understand, define, conceptualize and approach safer spaces? 2. How do young women and organizations that work with young women create safe spaces? This presentation will also offer a framework for safer spaces. Judyannet (She/her) works at the intersection of gender justice, civic participation, digital rights, feminist foreign policy, and knowledge creation processes. She has worked on these areas as a policy analyst, researcher, writer, and activist. Her most recent work has been in Canada’s international cooperation sector and the non-profit sector in Eastern Africa . Currently, Judyannet is leading policy work at the Inter-Council Network (ICN), co-leading the Africa Community Engagement Hub (ACE) and completing a doctorate on gender, safer spaces, and civic participation. Thursday, March 21: Exploring Authenticity of Leaders Engaged in Youth Programming Jackie Dowling will present a qualitative case study exploring what contributes to authentic engagement between youth leaders and adult leaders when collaborating in for-youth-by-youth program development. Guided by adult education and feminist theories and considerations of diversity and inclusion, this presentation will explore factors that inhibit and enable an authentic engagement. Drawing from her vast experience of working with youth from around the world, and her graduate research, Jackie will engage participants in discussions on her findings and practical tools to engage youth. Jackie has been working the areas of community development and youth engagement for the last 15 years across Turtle Island (Canada) and internationally. Jackie's role as Program Manager at The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation involves program development and implementation of youth programming at the local level, with ACIC member organizations and non-members community groups, and at the national level, with other Council members, national non-profits and government offices.
