Community Engagement Coordinator - ACIC
Position Description:
ACIC is looking for a responsible, experienced person to fill the position of Community Engagement Coordinator.
The primary focus of the Community Engagement Coordinator will be to support Phase 3 of our First Voices project. The project engages Atlantic Canadian youth on the theme of solidarity between Aboriginal groups in the North and the South and seeks to create strong, confident leaders with a solid understanding of global citizenship. Using the principles of asset-based community development, participants from indigenous communities in Atlantic Canada and Botswana will communicate the strengths of their communities through music at a series of speaking engagements, presentations, performances, and workshops across Atlantic Canada.
Key responsibilities include:
- Liaising with project partners including First Nations communities and organisations, youth groups, and music industry professionals.
- Coordinating logistics for community engagement tour of First Voices participants. Focus of tour will be outreach to First Nations youth and communities.
- Developing workshops for project participants on storytelling through music, public speaking, and the business of making music.
- Working with participants to plan cross-cultural events to share important aspects of First Nations culture, history, and community with indigenous participants from Botswana.
- Leading media and communications strategy to ensure message of the project reaches a broad audience.
- Developing educational resources to accompany the CD created by the participants.
- Conducting a project evaluation using a participatory approach to document successes, areas for improvement, and lessons learned.
In addition to the First Voices project, the Community Engagement Coordinator will also contribute to other public engagement projects addressing such cross-cutting themes as environmental sustainability, food security, and rural livelihoods. Activities would include: project concept development, project planning, partnership development, community outreach, evaluation, and reporting.
Desired Experience, Skills and Qualifications:
- University/college degree with a background in international development or equivalent
- Previous experience working with in a non-profit setting
- Knowledge of First Nations communities and international development organisations in the Atlantic
- Project management experience – designing & implementing project plans
- Previous experience organizing events
- Previous experience working with youth
- Excellent communications skills – oral & written
- Experience in public engagement
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated report writing skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Demonstrated ability to work as a team player
- Excellent computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Publisher, internet, e-mail, web publishing packages)
Eligibility:
To be eligible to participate in a Career Focus work experience placement, individuals must:
- between the ages of 15 and 30 inclusively at the time of selection
- a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a protected person within the meaning of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
- legally entitled to work in Canada
- legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial and/or territorial legislation and regulations
- out-of-school
- a post-secondary college or university graduate
- not receiving Employment Insurance benefits
- can demonstrate a lack of labour market attachment to field of study (under-employed or unemployed)
- can demonstrate that working in the field of community economic development is a career goal
- has not previously participated in a Career Focus work experience placement
Location: The position will be based at ACIC’s office in Halifax.
Salary: $15.00/hour for a 24-week contract (Sept. 8, 2008 – Feb. 20, 2009), 35 hours per week
