INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS

Jacqui Reevees

My name is Jacqui Reeves and I am originally from England but have lived in Nova Scotia for several years working in the field of early childhhod education for children with special needs.
In 1997 I went to Thailand as a volunteer with VSO (Volunteer Services Overseas) to work with a Foundation in Bangkok. Like so many other volunteers, I extended my placement and was fortunate to work for 3 different organisations over a period of 7 years. The most recent of these was with an ethnic women's organisation supporting special education needs of young refugee children living in camps along theThai/Burma border.
This experience has resulted in a keen interest in international development and now that I have returned to live in Halifax I am looking forward to finding out more about the programs that support new immigrants and refugees to Canada as well as learning more about members of ACIC and their activities.

Dr. Cristian Suteanu

I have always been interested in human-environment relations and their changing patterns, and I believe that one’s approach can really gain in depth by considering these topics from both sides: the “physical” and the “human”. I believe that geography offers the best perspectives in this regard. My research and teaching activities in a richly interdisciplinary context at the Institute of Geodynamics of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest reflect these convictions. Being at the same time a member of a very dynamic NGO, I was actively involved in educational programs (from the school level to the postdoctoral level) – related to a better understanding of human-environment relations and their transformation. I came to Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, in 2002: I am a member of the Department of Geography and the Environmental Studies Program. My research and teaching subjects cluster around the following key topics: analysis and modeling of environmental systems, environmental change, natural hazards and their human impact, environment and health, environmental communication, environmental education. I would be happy to meet people interested in any of these topics, especially community organizations, and to explore possibilities of collaboration.

Caro Molsen

I'm an educator with a background in environmental conservation and sustainability learning. My first experience in international development was through VSO Canada, as an Environmental Education Advisor for the Royal Thai Forest Department. This led me, on returning to Canada, to environmental policy contract work with CIDA and then on to a Masters in Sustainable Development in Australia.

My training is in Education for Sustainability, and I'm interested in the notion of transformative education for social change. Areas of focus include the social impacts of international development programming, cross-cultural communication, environmental education, and the training of development professionals and volunteers. Within the Canadian context, I'm particularly interested in issues of consumption and community development.
As a new resident of Halifax, I'm eager to connect with others involved in these areas and to learn more about the activities of ACIC members

Terri Cyr

Let me take a minute to introduce myself, my name is Teri Cyr. I am a recent graduate from the BBA program at the University of New Brunswick. I also have a background in International Business and Early Childhood Education. I have been involved with many NGO’s over the years and am very passionate about humanitarian issues.
Through my background in international business I have been introduced to the field of international development. I have traveled to many countries, in various levels of development, and became aware of how the business world can make a direct difference in the lives of people all over the world. It is my goal to utilize my business skills to help in any way I can to make a difference for developing nations.
I look forward to continuing my work with NGO’s and would love to meet people who are interested in these issues.

Florence Larkin

I have worked in international development for more than 20 years starting as a CUSO volunteer in Nigeria. Since then I have worked with several International Development organizations in a variety of sectors – micro credit, community development, civil society participation, capacity development and most recently child rights. I have worked in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
I have recently returned to PEI and am keen to stay plugged into the international development field. I look forward to getting more involved in ACIC in the coming year.

Michel Kaozi

I am Kaozi Michel M., originally from Africa. I successfully completed my studies in agriculture (International Development) at Alfred College of Guelph University in Ontario.
I have been involved in humanitarian organizations since 1995, first as a member of Catholic Development Organization for Development & Peace, Churches Coalition for Peace & Development for Africa and as Co-founder of Pioneers for Support and Development of Africa, S.O.S Africa Refugiés. After my studies and many years of work in Africa as Community Development Advisor and Agri-Business Consultant, I realize that; the only way to bring about sustainable development and reduce permanent poverty in most of African nations is by creating different kind of jobs in which people through their own effort can lift themselves out of poverty, build a better life for their families and contribute to progress of their communities (or country). Economic growth is a crucial part of the equation. That is the main reason I join today the big family of ACIC to make new contacts, meet people with vision for Africa, and perhaps to increase attention to the most neglected and forgotten countries of Africa such as the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Karen Bains

I am currently completing a Master's in Resource and Environmental Management at Dalhousie University.

I have a diverse cultural background that has shaped my interest in human rights issues and global inequalities. I completed a BA Honours Double Major in International Development with a concentration in Culture and Environment and Latin American and Caribbean Studies at York University. I have had the opportunity on various occasions to be involved in international projects. In 2001, I worked on a community-based initiative to build a tree nursery in Costa Rica. This initiative aimed to promote sustainable coffee farming by using shade grown methods. In 2002, I went back to Costa Rica as a team leader. With a team of York students we worked on National Park maintenance and eco-tourism. In 2003, I participated in a study abroad program in Dominican Republic where I further developed Spanish-speaking skills.

My most recent work has been a 9-month CIDA funded internship in Managua, Nicaragua working with a community as an Environmental Health Specialist. As a collaborative effort, we undertook local initiatives to promote preventative health measures. Projects included workshops, networking with other local groups, absorption pits, community clean up days, anti-parasite and malaria/dengue campaigns.

As a member of the ACIC, I look forward to being connected with other organizations and people to continue my interest in international issues.
